Arizona Department of Public Safety
1. How long are SHOTS CCW Courses and what information is covered?
Answer: The course is at least 8 Hours (Offered monthly; SHOTS also
holds a weekday evening course.) The course covers the basics of handguns,
safety, and ammunition, shooting fundamentals, gun storage and cleaning,
holster choices, dealing with law enforcement, non-lethal options, judgmental
shoot/don’t shoot situations, and the legal aspects of concealed carry
in Arizona.
2. How old do you have to be to take a CCW course?
Answer: In order to get a CCW permit you must be at least 21 years old
however you may take this course up to 6 months before your 21st birthday.
Your application will not be honored until you turn 21.
Under aged, 15years to 20years of age, may take the course for educational
purposes only, the permit is not available until 21 years of age. Students
under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent. A signed
letter from all parents must be submitted in joint custody situations
agreeing to the youth’s training.
3. What is the training cost of the first time CCW permit course and the CCW permit renewal?
Answer: $125.00 per-person for the Scheduled CCW Course. Arizona no
longer requires a renewal course of instruction
4. Where are the training courses located?
Answer: SHOTS Ranch (Kingman AZ) and Bumble Bee Ranch (Bumble Bee Arizona)
and Yavapai Recreational League (Prescott Arizona) are our home sites
but we also schedule Private or Special Interest Group Training at other

5. What type of gun should I bring to class?
Answer: Any reliable Semi-Automatic or Revolver (22 cal are not advised
but we will allow them if need be)
6. What if I don’t own a handgun?
Answer: With advanced notice S.H.O.T.S. will rent you a handgun, (CCW
Course Only) and all related equipment for class. All students renting
handguns must purchase their ammunition for class, (at least 5o rounds)
from our Pro Shop.
7. How will I know where the course will be held?
Answer: When your course has been paid for and confirmed through registration
of 6 students or more, we will provide you with directions to your training
site, including a map to your specific training location, if needed,
upon request. Generally, just check the calendar for dates and sites.
Our Calendar will indicate the class location.
8. What is the fee for a CCW permit and how long is it valid for?
Answer: The State Permit Fee is $60.00 and is valid for 5 years. The
application and fees may be submitted to the DPS only after the student
has passed the CCW course.
9. What happens to the CCW permit after the 5 years have expired?
Answer:The Renewal program includes re-fingerprinting. You must also
pay another $43.00 for the next 5 years of your permit. And Submit your
DPS supplied application. There is no renewal class required by Arizona
Department of Public Safety, Concealed Carry Unit. SHOTS highly recommends
professional training and frequent practice sessions.
10. Are there mandatory tests involved for the CCW courses?
Answer: Yes! There is written test involved. You should be able to answer
the questions correctly after attending the lecture. The tests score
must be 70% or higher (Pass/Fail). Also you must qualify on the range
on a 10 round course of fire. The test consists of 5 rounds at 5 yards
and 5 rounds at 10 yards on a TQ-15 target with a 14″x16″
scoring area. Target scoring is also 70% Pass/Fail.
SHOTS demands students to strictly adhere to all safety issues, range
rules and instructor directions in order to pass the course.
11. When can I take my Renewal course and how soon can I apply for my permit?
Answer: You can apply and send in your application no sooner than 90
days before the permit expires. There is NO LONGER a Renewal class necessary
to reapply. AZ DPS CCW Unit will send you all of the materials in the
mail to renew your permit before it expires.
12. Does S.H.O.T.S. offer any other firearms training?
Answer: Yes, Basic Safety Training thru Advanced Tactical Training for
civilians, law enforcement and military. To receive list of classes
just call the S.H.O.T.S. Main office for information or check our website.
13. Do I have to be a resident of Arizona to take the Course and receive my permit to carry concealed?
Answer: There is no stipulation stating that you must be an Arizona
resident. Arizona law states that you must be trained in Arizona by
a qualified instructor.
14. What other equipment and belongings do you recommend for my training?
Answer : Most of our students will agree that using their own ear and eye protection and other support gear is a good choice. A good quality strong side holster along with a magazine pouch will serve you well.
Always remember that training in the outdoors will often have temperature
conditions changes. This is Arizona, let us not forget.
